Request it, and we’ll hold it for you to pick up

Hold pick-up room at library

If you search the library catalog, and what you want isn’t available right now, you can request it. If it’s checked out, your name goes on a waiting list. If it’s owned by a nearby library, they’ll pull it off the shelf and send it to our library.

We’ll let you know when your item is ready for you to pick up in the Holds Pick-up Room (see above). At our Douglass Branch, ask at the desk. Note: When you pick up an item, you must check it out using the same library card that was used to place the request.

To request something:

  • Find it in the catalog and click on the “Request…” button, or
  • Call us at 217/403–2070 during library hours (for children’s books, call 217/403–2030).

Most items can be requested — even brand new materials that haven’t arrived at the library yet. Only rental items and reference materials can’t be requested.

If we don’t own what you want

To cancel a request

No longer need an item you requested? Take a moment to cancel your request; it’s a nice courtesy for others who may be waiting.

  • At the top of our website, click “My Account/Renew“ to log in to your library account. Enter your library card number and PIN.
  • Click on “Hold Requests“ to see a list of your requested items.
  • To cancel one, check the box next to it, and click “Cancel Request.”
  • You can choose all items by clicking the box in the green bar.
  • We can also cancel your request for you; call 217/403–2000.

Note: Cancelled requests cannot be “undone.” If you change your mind, you’ll need to place a new request.

To change where you pick up your item

You can either:

  • Cancel the request in your account information, then place it again, choosing the different location for pick-up.
  • Call us at 217/403–2000 and ask us to change your pick-up location.

Delay Holds While You’re Away

Don’t want requested items to arrive while you’re on vacation? “Suspend” your requests to a later date. This also helps if you’ve requested several items, but don’t want them to arrive all at once.

To suspend a request:

1) At the top of our website, click “My Account/Renew” and log in to your library account.

2) Click “Hold Requests” to see a list of items you’ve requested.

3) Check the box beside any item you want to delay.

4) Enter a date where you see “Suspend until” (the default is one month).

5) Click “Change Status.” The “Suspended” status and date will now be displayed to the right of the title.

You can always make a request active again. Just check the box next to the
item and click “Change Status” again.
