There’s a new baby at our house.
These are great books for preschoolers who are looking forward to, or getting to know, a new brother or sister. Parents of newborns, see our helpful hints on how to read to your baby, plus our lists of our favorite baby books.
- A Baby for Grace (Picture Books/E/Why) by Ian Whybrow. When the new baby arrives, everyone says “no” to Grace — until she finds the perfect present for the baby.
- Good as Goldie (Picture Books/E/Pal) by Margie Palatini. Goldie, the big sister, describes all the things she can do that her baby brother, Nicholas, cannot.
- Hello Baby! (Juvenile Nonfiction/J306.875/Roc) by Lizzy Rockwell. A little boy describes how a baby is growing inside his mother‘s stomach and how his family is preparing for the baby‘s arrival.
- How Do I Feel About Our New Baby (Juvenile Nonfiction/J306.875/Gre) by Jen Green. Dean, Rosie, Max, and May answer questions about having new babies in their families and describe how it makes them feel.
- Mommy's in the Hospital Having a Baby (Juvenile Nonfiction/J618.4/Ros) by Maxine B. Rosenberg. In this book illustrated with photographs, children learn what to expect when they visit their mothers and a new baby sister or brother in the hospital.
- Mr. Big Brother (Easy Readers/ER/Hoo) by William H. Hooks. Eli is excited about the new baby coming to his house but is disappointed when the baby is a girl rather then the brother he wanted.
- The New Baby at Your House (Juvenile Nonfiction/J306.875/Col) by Joanna Cole. Big brothers and sisters learn what it is like to have a new baby at home.
- Rosie and the Tortoise (Picture Books/E/Wil) by Margaret Wild and Ron Brooks. Little Rosie the rabbit won‘t hold her premature baby brother until her father tells her a story about a tortoise and a hare.
- A Special Something (Picture Books/E/Fea) by Jan Fearnley. A little girl imagines a variety of animals when her mother tells her there is a “special something” growing inside her mother‘s tummy.
- Tadpoles (Picture Books/E/Jam) by Betsy James. Molly brings home frog eggs from the pond. As she watches them grow into frogs, she teaches her little brother, Davey, to walk.
- What Shall We Do with the Boo-Hoo Baby? (Picture Books/E/Cow) by Cressida Cowell. Cow, Duck, Dog, and Cat try a variety of methods to keep the baby from crying.
