Scare Up a Good Book: The Summer Reading Game for Kids

Reading is monstrously good fun with our “Scare Up a Good Book” Summer Reading Game for infants up through fifth grade. (Teens have their own game; see below.) Get a reading log from the library to keep track of your reading time. Each time you visit the Main Library, bring your log along – and drop a marble into our marvelous Rube Goldberg machine! Sign up at our Main Library or Douglass Branch.

Get in on early bird registration at the Main Library on Sat., May 29, at 2 pm, when Silly Safaris’ Amazon John brings some live guests for our Not-So-Scary Scary Animal Show. The Summer Reading Game runs from June 1 to August 15, and is sponsored by the Library Friends.

Overdue Fee Changing July 1

Starting July 1, overdue fees for free materials from our library will be 20 cents per day, up from the current 10 cents. Rental items will stay at their current rate of 20 cents per day.

Due to slower growth in property taxes, the library’s main source of funding, we are taking a variety of steps to balance our budget. This includes trimming programs and leaving staff positions vacant, along with the change in fees. These steps are needed to keep funding for books and other collections close to current levels, during a time when library use continues to grow. This is our library’s first overdue fee increase since 1992.

Delay Holds While You’re Away

Don’t want requested items to arrive while you’re on vacation? You can “suspend” your requests to a later date. This can also be helpful if you’ve requested a number of items, but don’t want them to arrive all at once. To suspend a request:

  • Go to our website, champaign.org. Click “My Account/Renew” and log into your library account.
  • Click “Hold Requests” to see a list of items you’ve requested.
  • Check the box beside any item you want to delay.
Enter a date where you see “Suspend until.” (The default is one month.)
  • Click “Change Status.” The “Suspended” status and date will now be displayed to the right of the title.

You can always make a request active again. Just check the box next to the item and click “Change Status” again. You can also cancel requests. If you no longer want an item, this is a nice courtesy to others who may be waiting.

Jazzy Summer Concerts

Download Audiobooks to Your iPhone

A new, free application makes it easy to download free Overdrive audiobooks to your iPhone or other Apple device. Just search the “App Store” on your iPhone for “Overdrive,” and find “Overdrive Media Console.” Press the green “Install” button. You’ll need your iTunes password.

To download an audiobook to your phone, you’ll need your library card number (storing it in your phone keeps it handy.) Start at our website, champaign.org. Click “Catalog,” then “MediaMall Downloads.” Hint: For your library, choose “Lincoln Trail Libraries System.” When you download a title, the Overdrive player opens automatically. Downloads are “checked out” to you for up to 2 weeks.

For Teens: Discoveries @ the Library

You’ll be surprised at what you’ll uncover this summer at the library! Our teen summer reading game rewards reading with treats from Jarlings, Chipotle, and Subway — plus a free book! Join in any time, from June 1 to August 15. Plus, discover how to design your own space shooter video game at a free program on Sun., Jun. 13, from 2 to 4 pm. To register, visit bit.ly/gamedesign613. And drop in any Wednesday night at 7 pm for an hour of Wii and board games (Jun. 16 to Aug. 4).

Library Program Gets Garden Hills Kids Excited About Reading

Students at Garden Hills Elementary School were eagerly reading this year as a result of a new program led by the Champaign Public Library. Thanks to a grant from the Marajen Stevick Foundation and the Community Foundation of East Central Illinois, third and fourth graders at the school received new books for their classrooms and school library, as well as books to keep and take home.

To motivate students to read for their own enjoyment, our librarians visited each classroom regularly to talk about books and pique students’ interest in the stories and subjects. Students also came to our library for lively field trips and a school night.

The combination of popular new books and encouragement from our librarians produced dramatic results. Teachers reported that students expressed appreciation for new books to choose from, looked forward to independent reading time, read books from start to finish, and shared with their classmates their enthusiasm for the books they had read.

The program was supplemented with an appearance at the school this April by award-winning children’s author Sally M. Walker, sponsored by the Library Friends.
