Wild About Reading: Play the Summer Reading Games

Stories and science and comics, oh my! This year’s Summer Reading Games for kids and teens invite everyone to go wild reading. Games run from June 1 to August 15.

Babies through fifth grade graduates can join in the Read on the Wild Side game. Kids can read their favorite kinds of books, keeping their reading skills strong while school is out. Get a reusable library bag just for signing up. All participants earn a free book, thanks to the Library Friends. For teens, the Summer Reading Game is Go Wild @ the Library.
Register any time starting June 1 at the Main Library or Douglass Branch. Teens can register online.

Woody Woodward on the Hammond Organ

On Wed., June 10, the summer season of Lifelong Learners @ the Library kicks off with a musical treat, as Woody Woodward talks about the influence of the Hammond organ. Joining him for a live demonstration will be Randy Salman on tenor sax and Gary Peyton on drums. Lifelong Learners events are on the second Wednesday each month in our Robeson Pavilion Room A & B. Coffee is served at 9:30 am, and each program starts at 10 am.

More Lifelong Learning This Summer

Additional events for the summer are Exploring Caves & Karst with Julie Angel on July 8 and Charles Darwin: The Man and His Ideas on August 12. This series is a community collaboration between Parkland College and the Champaign Public Library.

Reusable Library Bags for $2

Strong reusable totes with the library logo are now available at the library for $2 each. Our totes have pockets to stash your due date receipts, and long handles to toss over your shoulder or wear backpack style.

Choose black, cranberry, or royal blue. The bags can be purchased at the Checkout Desk at our Main Library and Douglass Branch, and also in the FriendShop used book store.

Juneteenth at Douglass Park

This is the fourth year for our annual Juneteenth event in Douglass Park. Come to this community celebration and commemorate 144 years since news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas and freed the last slaves. Bring your family and friends to the park, located at Fifth and Grove Streets (next to B.T. Washington School), on Sat., Jun. 13, between 12 and 3 pm for games, contests, trivia, prizes, and refreshments.

Thursdays @ the Library: Twilight Revisited

Enjoy the madness one more time! Middle and high school students can do Twilight Trivia and other related activities starting at 4 pm, then watch the Twilight movie (rated PG; 122 min.) at 6 pm. Snacks will be provided. Join us on Thu., Jun. 4, in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B. The Thursdays @ the Library series continues with Recycled Decorating, Games Galore, yoga and more. For details about teen events at both our Main Library and Douglass Branch, see our event calendar online.

New Storytime Times

We’re now offering our most popular weekly story programs at three different times. Parents and little ones can enjoy 20 minutes of bouncy, musical fun at O Baby! starting at 9:45, 10:15, or 10:45 am on Mondays. Our Tuesday Twos program for two-year-olds is offered on Tuesdays at the same three times. Both are in the Nate & Lillie Story Room. See all of our upcoming free events on our online calendar.

Funding for this newsletter is provided by the Champaign Public Library Foundation and the Friends of the Champaign Public Library.
