Come Cheer for the Library

Come be part of a rousing cheer as we celebrate completion of our new library, inside and out. On Sunday, July 27, we’re hosting a free party called Three Cheers for the Library!

Sustainable Design Talk

Join us at 1 pm, as we pass out free pom-poms and streamers for the kids. Then, after a few words of dedication, we’ll give a big cheer together. At 2 pm, kids and families can enjoy drummers Rocky Maffit and Chad Dunn in our Nate & Lillie Story Room.

Also at 2 pm, all are welcome to hear architect Carol Ross Barney (pictured), design principal for the project, speak in our Robeson Pavilion about sustainable, green elements of the building’s design. Read more about those below.

Ross Barney graduated from UIUC in 1971. She is a strong proponent of environmentally friendly design and has an international reputation in the design of public and institutional buildings. She was honored in 2005 with a Thomas Jefferson Award for Public Architecture from the American Institute of Architects.

Home School Fair

Come learn about the many programs, organizations, clubs, and groups available to support home school families in the CU area, including our own offerings. We’re hosting a Home School Fair on Saturday, August 16, from 2 to 4 pm. This free event is open to all, whether you’re home schooling now or considering your options. A panel of home schoolers will discuss tips on how to organize your day. Special activities for children are also planned. Come meet other families and get your year flying to new heights with an array of helpful information. Registration is not required. For more information, call Children’s Services at 217/403–2030.

Benefit the Library When You Shop at Jerry’s

Each year, the Champaign Public Library Foundation receives a share of more than $50,000 donated to local nonprofits through the Jerry’s IGA HVC Charitable Rebate Program. But our benefit depends on the participation of shoppers like you!

Signing up is easy. Complete a simple form, available on our website or in our August newsletter, and take it to a Jerry’s service desk to show that you’ve chosen us to benefit. Each time you shop, present your Jerry’s HVC card and the library receives 1% of your purchase cost — at no extra cost to you! If you don’t have an HVC card, get one at Jerry’s when you sign up.

If you participated last year, your enrollment expired July 1. Re-enroll now to make sure your support continues.

Lincoln-Douglas Exhibit

From August to October of 1858, Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas met in seven cities across Illinois in a series of debates that framed the critical issues in the conflict over slavery and states’ rights.

A sesquicentennial commemoration, organized by the debate communities, plus Springfield and Bement, includes a traveling exhibit that will stop at our library this month. Visit the exhibit on the second floor reading area, overlooking the lobby, between August 11 to 31 during library hours.

The exhibit was created by staff at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield. The sesquicentennial debate celebration includes a series of events billed as the Lincoln and Douglas Reunion Tour. For details, visit lookingforlincoln.com.

Shades of Green

On Sunday, July 27, architect Carol Ross Barney will present a free talk about sustainable design elements of our library. Join us in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B at 2 pm, following our dedication ceremonies (see above for details). Here’s a quick list of those elements, and what makes them green.

  • Bamboo floors and walls: bamboo matures in about 8 years, compared to at least 40 for a tree, consuming fewer resources and helping save forests
  • Natural light from skylights, windows: reduces the need for artificial light, saving energy and creating a pleasing space for people
  • Elements that reflect direct light: angled brick piers and copper fins on west wall, automatic window blinds, honeycombed panelite glass, reflective glass coating, and a white roof help keep the building cool and cut AC costs
  • Motion-sensing lights and photocells: dim or turn off lights when they’re not needed
  • Indirect lighting: bounces light off ceiling for more efficient distribution of light
  • Raised access flooring: flooring panels made from 30 percent recycled material; with heat ducts underfoot, heat rises with less fan power; better air circulation means better air quality; no ducts near ceiling allows for taller windows, more light and nicer views
  • Argon-filled glass: argon gas between panes of glass provides efficient insulation
  • Shade trees and greenery in parking lot and around the block: reduce buildup of heat in the asphalt, helping cool the whole area

Join in the Cheering!

Join us at 1 pm Sunday, July 27. Details at left.

O’Brien Family in Concert

Local singer-songwriter Lynn O’Brien and three other O’Briens — Peter, Ginny, and Margaret — will join their voices in a blend of folk and original songs, accompanied by guitar and piano. All ages are invited to enjoy their free concert in our Latte Da! Cafe on Sunday, August 3, from 2 to 3 pm.

Lynn O’Brien has performed often around CU, adding her voice to various jazz ensembles and singing solo at the piano. Her debut CD, Umbrella, was released in 2006; check it out at the library. Lynn is a senior majoring in music therapy at ISU. You also may recognize Lynn’s mother, Ginny; she works in our children’s department.

Download Free Audiobooks

Audiobooks help the miles fly by on the road. Did you know you can download them from home? In the library catalog, click on the gray Media Mall tab to find hundreds of popular and classic titles, both fiction and nonfiction. Listen to them on a computer or transfer them to a portable device or CD (yours to keep!). Tip: When asked what your library is, choose Lincoln Trail Libraries System.

You can search for an author or title, or browse categories including new arrivals, children’s books, classics, romance, and mysteries. Nonfiction subjects include biographies, business, cooking, and foreign language instruction.

Jazz Sandwich

This band covers everything from Cyndi Lauper to Jimi Hendrix and makes it all uniquely their own. Come enjoy a free performance by Jazz Sandwich at the library on Sunday, August 10, at 2 pm in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B. The group features Jesse Brown on keyboards, Josh Walden on bass, Jeff Helgesen on trumpet, Josh Quirk on drums, and Tom Paynter on flute and keyboard.
