Get in the Game, READ!
Summer reading game season is back! Everyone from babies to adults can join in the fun and earn rewards for reading from June 1 to August 15. Sign up at our Main Library, Douglass Branch, or Bookmobile. All participating children earn a first place prize: a brand new book (thanks to the Library Friends)! Teens can sign up online and get a free scoop of custard just for joining in. The reading game helps encourage kids to fit books into their summer schedules. Studies show that kids who read in the summer start out stronger at school in the fall.
Benefit the Library When You Shop at Jerry’s
Each year, the Champaign Public Library Foundation receives a share of more than $50,000 donated to local nonprofits through the Jerry’s IGA HVC Charitable Rebate Program. But our benefit depends on the participation of shoppers like you!
Use Our Form to Sign Up
Signing up is easy. Complete a simple form, available on our website or in our June newsletter, and take it to a Jerry’s service desk to show that you’ve chosen us to benefit. Each time you shop, present your Jerry’s HVC card and the library receives 1% of your purchase cost — at no extra cost to you! If you don’t have an HVC card, get one at Jerry’s when you sign up.
Enrollments expire each year on July 1. If you’re currently participating, thank you! Please re-enroll by June 30 to provide continuous support.

Third Annual Juneteenth Celebration
Celebrated since June 19, 1865, Juneteenth commemorates the day that news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas and freed the last slaves. Gather up your family and friends to continue this festive tradition with games, contests, trivia, prizes, and refreshments for all ages. Join us at our Douglass Branch Library (and outside in Douglass Park) on Saturday, June 14, from noon to 3 pm. This free event is sponsored by the Library Friends.
Celebrate Your New Library
We’re planning another celebration, featuring a talk by architect Carol Ross Barney and a preview of our time capsule, when our parking and landscaping are complete. Watch for details coming later this summer.
Rental Books Now Sold in the FriendShop
You may remember our periodic sales of rental books — gently used bestsellers we had retired to make room for newer titles. Those books are now sold in the FriendShop Used Book Store, open Sundays from 1:30 to 5:30 pm on the library’s lower level. The cost of these hardbacks is $6 each and the selection changes often.
The FriendShop offers a variety of used books, CDs, and videos; most sell for $1 or less. Reusable cotton canvas book bags are available in two sizes, along with a variety of other special gift items.
Library Friends members donate their time to manage the shop. All proceeds directly benefit the library.

June 08
Abe Lincoln and the 8th Judicial Circuit
There’s a unique Lincoln story for each central Illinois town where the lanky young attorney stopped as he rode the 8th Judicial Circuit. As part of the Lincoln Bicentennial commemoration, Guy Fraker will present a free talk about Lincoln’s formative years on nearby back roads. Join us in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B on Thursday, June 26, at 7 pm. Fraker is a Bloomington attorney and Abraham Lincoln authority.
Remus Lupins Return
The Remus Lupins, the Los Angeles band recently voted “Wizard Rock Band of the Year,” will return to the library for a free, hour-long concert on Friday, June 27, at 7 pm. Harry Potter music fans of all ages are welcome!
The Amish of Illinois’ Heartland
Hear News-Gazette reporter Rebecca Mabry share her insights into the lifestyle and beliefs of the Amish community in nearby Arthur and Arcola. Mabry will bring copies of her recently published book, The Amish of Illinois’ Heartland, to the library for sale and signing. Join us at this free program for adults on Saturday, June 7, at 2 pm.
Catalog Tip: Finding Songs
The library catalog makes it easy to find a particular song, either to listen to, or a score to play from. If you know the song’s title, do a “Title” search, and you’ll find CDs or books of printed music that include that song (a musical notes symbol indicates printed music). Not sure of the exact title? Do a “Keyword” search.
Super Summer Saturdays
Families and kids of all ages, stir something special into your Saturdays this month with a variety of events from 2 to 2:45 pm. Events for June are:
June 14: WordGirl. Join WILL-TV for word-building activities as they showcase PBS’s new animated superhero, WordGirl.
June 21: Miss Green’s Traveling Puppet Parlour. Enjoy an outrageous show of fairy tales, traditional stories, and silly poetry.
June 28: Music and Dance with Leonardo. Sing, dance, and shake with Leonardo, the exciting new voice in children’s music, as he performs songs from his Parents’ Choice Award-winning debut CD.
Friday Flicks for Teens
Once a month, bring your friends and catch a free film and free popcorn at the library. We’ll kick off Friday, June 20, at 6:30 pm with High School Musical 2 (Rated G; 120 minutes).
