Starting a Business, Marketing on a Budget:

Free Business Workshops

Our popular Business Know-How workshop series returns this fall. On Thursday, Sep. 27, at noon, Prof. Stephen Brown will outline low-cost but high-impact marketing techniques for businesses and organizations. More

Then on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 7 pm, Deb Karplus will help you explore the advantages, disadvantages, and legal and tax implications of starting your own business. More

Both free workshops will be at the Main Library. Registration is not required.

Homework Tutors: Free Help Online

You’ve got homework; we’ve got help! Free Live Homework Help is available through our website from 3 to 9 pm daily.

Students in Champaign schools, grades 4 to 12 (plus early college), can connect to a professional tutor for on-the-spot help with math, science, social studies, and English. Bilingual tutors can help Spanish speakers with math and science questions from 3 to 9 pm every Sunday through Thursday.

Champaign students who used Live Homework Help last year gave their tutors enthusiastic, thumbs-up ratings. Tutors are carefully trained and regularly evaluated. A Champaign library card number is needed to log in. Live Homework Help is powered by tutor.com.

New Library Update: Energy-Saving Features Installed

Many features recently installed in the new library fit into an overall plan to make the building energy efficient and respectful of the environment.

Sun-shading copper fins, pictured, along with special kinds of glass and Solatube skylights, will limit direct light (cutting the need for air conditioning) and provide pleasantly diffused natural light. Where lighting is needed, photocells will adjust the brightness automatically. A light-colored roof will also reduce cooling costs by relecting heat.

Many walls are being covered in attractive carmel-colored bamboo. Using this efficient and fast-growing material instead of hardwood means fewer slow-growing trees are harvested. Energy savings will also be found underfoot; air will circulate below raised access flooring, reducing the cost of overhead ductwork and letting heat rise naturally.

“Whiz Kids” Perform

They’re young, they’re talented, and they’re here to sing, dance, and play for you and your family.

Join us for the free Whiz Kids program series every Saturday afternoon in October at 2 pm. Registration is not needed. Guest performers are:
October 6: Central High School drumline
October 13: Champaign Park District dancers
October 20: Central Illinois Children’s Chorus
October 27: Ventriloquist Hannah Leskosky (pictured)

We Want to Hear Your Library Story

Do you have a short anecdote about what our library has done for you? Share it with us and you could win a prize. As we get ready for our big move, it’s a nice time think about what this library has meant to you or your family. If chosen, your story could be used in our promotional or fundraising materials. Watch for more about our story-gathering project in the fall.

Library Closed on Labor Day

The library will be closed and the Bookmobile will not run on Monday, September 3. Our book drops will stay open for you to return materials.

Hot Topics for Cool Kids

Computer game design. Wild weather with Ed Kieser (pictured). Crime scene investigation. Life in revolutionary times. These great topics will capture the imaginations of kids in grades 2 to 5 in our Super Saturdays program series in September. Each free, 45-minute event starts at 2 pm. And everyone who attends will take home a free book. Registration is not required. This series is made possible by a gift from JPMorgan Chase. Find details on our online calendar.

Our next quarterly Bestseller Sale starts Sep. 1. Buy gently used books from our Rental Collection for 75 percent off the retail price, plus audiobooks for $10 each. Your purchases, along with rental fees, pay for the Rental Collection — a convenient “get it now” option. Find the sale near the Checkout Desk during all open hours.

Thinking About Volunteering? We’ ve Got a Place for You!

Want to offer your time and talents somewhere? Let us suggest a place where you already like to spend time — your library! Volunteers work with our friendly staff on the everyday activities of the library. Our volunteer coordinator will match your skills with our needs. Contact Chiawen Liu at 217/403–2076 or cliu@champaign.org.

A few areas where our need is greatest right now are: shelving and arranging books; helping with children’s events; home delivery; data entry; and DVD, CD, and audiobook maintenance.

Volunteering 101: An Introduction for Teens

At a free presentation by the United Way of Champaign County, students in middle and high school can learn how to start volunteering and discover the exciting opportunities available in their community. Volunteering 101, an hour-long program, will be presented at the Main Library at 4 pm on Wednesday, Sep. 19.

Foundation Board Adds New Members

The Champaign Public Library Foundation Board of Directors welcomed three new members this fall: Marc Chagnon, JoAnn Henneman, and Annette Lansford. Foundation board members volunteer their time to encourage financial gifts in support of the library. This year, the Foundation succeeded in raising $3 million for the new library.
