Summer Reading Game: 2,000 Books to Give Away
Reading, kids, summer, and fun: it all comes together in the annual Summer Reading Game.
We have 2,000 prize books to give away, so start reading soon! The theme for this year’s game for children is Mission Read: To the Library and Beyond. Visit any of our locations to pick up your Rocket Reader Log, load up on books, and have fun reading, listening to books, or having someone read to you. Anyone in preschool to fifth grade can join in. The game lifts off on June 1 and ends July 31.
Teens have their own summer reading club, LOL @ the Library, from June 1 to August 15. Book prizes are provided by the Friends of the Champaign Public Library.
Douglass Branch Tenth Anniversary
Our Douglass Branch Library is celebrating ten years on Grove Street with two special free events.
First, stop in for cake, punch, and tropical fun at the Aloha! 10th Anniversary Luau on Friday, June 15, from 3 to 5 pm. Then, on Sat., June 16, take the family to Douglass Park for a Juneteenth Celebration from noon to 3 pm with games, trivia, contests, prizes, and free summer treats. Juneteenth commemorates the day in 1865 when news of the Emancipation Proclamation reached Texas and freed the last of the slaves.

Janice Harrington Takes Teaching Position
After seventeen years as manager of our Children’s Services department, Janice Harrington is leaving the library.
But she’s not going far. Harrington will apply her gift for storytelling and her enthusiasm for books as a professor in the U of I’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing.
Harrington has been busy with her own writing, with two new books out this spring. The Chicken Chasing Queen of Lamar County is her second picture book for children. Early reviews of the book are full of praise; Publisher’s Weekly noted its “lyrical, creatively visual language.”
Harrington’s first picture book, Going North, was published in 2004 to similarly favorable reviews, including a Top of the List Booklist Editors’ Choice designation. The book also earned Harrington the Ezra Jack Keats Award for Best New Writer of Children’s Books, awarded by the New York Public Library.
Her other new book, this one for adults, is a collection of poems, Even the Hollow My Body Made Is Gone. That manuscript was selected by publisher BOA from more than 900 entries to win the 5th annual A. Poulin, Jr. Poetry Prize for a poet’s first book. Harrington’s poetry also earned her a 2007 NEA Fellowship in Poetry.
Library Closed July 4
The library will be closed and the Bookmobile will not run on Wednesday, July 4. Come see the Bookmobile in the Freedom Parade! Our book drops will stay open for you to return materials.
