Construction and Fundraising Both Making Good Progress
Our new library suddenly feels a whole lot closer. First, it started peeking up above the face of the old building. Then the empty area at the east end of the lot took on the shape of a one-story meeting room wing. Now glass is going up on the north side.
At the same time, the Library Foundation is watching its $3 million fundraising goal get closer, too. “The building campaign is going very well so far,” says Library Director Marsha Grove. “And, as construction moves along, I think it’s becoming easier for everyone to sense the enormous impact this new library is going to have.”
Your gift now would help the Foundation reach its goal and make you a real part of this significant step forward for our community. Gifts of any amount are welcome. Look for the green “Contribute” logo to give online. Or mail a check, payable to Champaign Public Library Foundation, to us at 505 S. Randolph St., Champaign, IL 61820. If you’ve already given, thank you!
Gifts of $10,000 or more will be recognized on an engraved glass wall in the library lobby. A gift of $5,000 can permanently sponsor a library shelf. For details, contact Donna Pittman, development director, at 217/403–2048 or dpittman@champaign.org.
Business Know-How: Free Workshops
Whether you are just thinking of starting a business or are a seasoned professional, come learn from business experts at a series of free “Business Know-How” workshops at the library. Topics include how to start a business, tax and legal issues, energy efficiency, getting organized at work. To register, call 217/403–2070 or register on our online events calendar. Walk-ins are welcome, too. Check our complete list of more than a dozen programs.
New Computers Bring Self-Service, File Saving, and More Software
In April, we will replace many of our public computers, bringing computer users more flexibility and features they’ve asked for. Improvements will include the ability to bring files and save work, print in color, and use a broader selection of software.
New self-service Reservation Stations will let patrons reserve the next free computer (or choose their favorite). Patrons can also use any open machine for fifteen minutes if it isn’t reserved then. Computer users will need to enter a library card number from any nearby public library when they sign up or log in. Anyone without a card who doesn’t live in Champaign can get a “computer card” good for one month of access.
During installation, computers will be down for a day or two; watch for news of specific dates. more
Ask an Expert: Business Q & A Online
Local business experts will respond to your questions and comments and share free advice in a new series of “Ask an Expert” discussions online. Each expert will check in daily for two weeks to monitor the discussion at bizknowhow.org. Renee Hiller, Benefits Team Leader at Benefit Planning Consultants, Inc., will start the series March 5 to 17 by helping business owners consider issues affecting benefits. Upcoming topics include saving energy, competitive intelligence, getting organized, finding funding, and legal issues. See the complete schedule.
