Thousands of Used Books and More at Fall Sale

The Library Friends are gearing up for another giant sale of used books and more. Join them November 9 to 11 at a new location: Robeson’s Plaza, at Mattis and Kirby Avenues, across from Old Farm Shops. Most hardback books, VHS tapes, DVDs, and CDs sell for just $1 each. Paperbacks and children’s books cost only 50 cents.
Fri., Nov. 9, is a members-only pre-sale from 4 to 8 pm. You can join at the door for as little as $10. The sale opens to the public on Sat., Nov. 10, from 9 am to 5 pm. On Sun., Nov. 11, from 1 to 5 pm, you can fill a bag for just $2 and buy special books at half-price.
Hold Your Donations
After November 4, please hold onto any books you plan to donate until after the new library opens next year. The new library will have a bookstore-like room where sales can happen regularly.

On Board with...Rusty Freeland

Meet your library leaders through this series of profiles. Rusty Freeland has been president of the Champaign Public Library Board of Trustees since July 1998.

Describe the importance of public libraries, in 20 words or fewer.

Public libraries are a great community resource. They give everyone an equal opportunity to access information.

Describe your background and what you bring to the board.

I am an attorney at Meyer Capel and have been practicing law with the firm for over 20 years. I have lived in Champaign County most of my life and am a graduate of the University of Illinois. Between college and law school, I worked for a local CPA firm.

During my time on the Library Board, I have been actively involved in two building projects, the creation of the Champaign Public Library Foundation, hiring a new library director and numerous budget and financial issues. My experience as an attorney and accountant has been useful in all of these areas. Having contacts in the local business community also helped me assist in the fundraising campaign for the new main library building.

Tell us a little about your family.

My wife, Jill, and I met in high school and attended college together at the U of I. We have two sons — Sam and Harrison. Sam is a student at Parkland College and a volunteer firefighter in Savoy. Harrison is a student at Champaign Central High School. Jill is a homemaker. Besides attending our sons’ baseball, football and hockey games, we enjoy gardening, reading and following the Fighting Illini and the St. Louis Cardinals.

What have you read, watched, or listened to lately?

I am currently reading You Can’t Go Home Again by Thomas Wolfe. Earlier this year, I read Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Thirteen Moons by Charles Frazier.

The Friends also offer two different cotton canvas totes with the library logo. Small totes come in red or navy for just $10. Our popular large bag comes with navy or green trim and includes an outside pocket. It’s a bargain at just $18. Spillproof library travel mugs keep beverages safe around books; they sell for $10 in cobalt blue or $12 for brushed steel.

Ask for these items at the Checkout Desk at the Main Library. All major credit cards are accepted. Your purchase supports the library. Thank you!

Library Closed November 12 and 22

The library will be closed Monday, November 12, for a day of staff training, and Thursday, November 22, for Thanksgiving. Any time we’re closed, our book drops stay open for your convenience, so you can still return items.

Tell Us Your Library Story and You Could Win a $100 Gift Card

Share a memory or tell us what this library has meant to you or your family. Submit a brief story by Nov. 30 and you’ll be entered into a drawing for a $100 gift card from Target, provided by the Library Friends. Your story will go on our website and, if chosen, in other promotional or fundraising materials. Submit your story online. Or send it to Elizabeth Otto, our promotions manager. Drop it off at the library, mail it in, or e-mail eotto@champaign.org. See the wonderful stories we’ve already received.

Library Moves Closer to Completion

As the new library gets closer to completion, carpeting, shelving, and furniture are appearing throughout the building. Watch for news later this fall about the plans for a grand opening celebration early next year.

Music of Ireland

Come hear Bryan Kelso Crow, host of the public radio program Celtic Connections, play Irish dance tunes and ballads on tin whistle, flute, and accordion, and talk about the cultural context of Irish and American music. Crow’s free program will be at the library on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 4 pm. This event is funded by the Illinois Humanities Council.

Holiday Stress Busters

Come learn relaxation techniques to make the holiday season more enjoyable — and take home a free gift. Jamie Kleiss from U of I Extension will lead a free program at the library on Tues., Nov. 13, at 7 pm (please note the date, which was listed incorrectly in our fall calendar).

Meet Captivating Storyteller Betsy Hearne

Betsy Hearne will mesmerize you with her storytelling at a free program at the library on Sat., Nov. 17, at 2 pm. Hearne will also talk about how to write and tell stories. Hearne’s first picture book, Seven Brave Women, was inspired by the women in her family and earned the 1998 Jane Addams Children’s Book Award.
