Children’s book author Kate Klise will visit the Champaign Public Library, 200 W. Green St., on Thursday, April 28, at 7 p.m., to talk about her life as an author of quirky bestsellers for young people — and a correspondent for People magazine.

This free event, in Robeson Pavilion Room A & B, is open to the public and is designed for children in grades 3 to 5. While in Champaign, the author will also visit students at Kenwood and Garden Hills Elementary Schools.

Klisevs books range from the “Little Rabbit” picture books to the popular 43 Old Cemetery Road and Regarding series, stories that unfold in a scrapbook-like series of letters, clippings and journal entries. Her sister, M. Sarah Klise, provides the illustrations — a creative collaboration that dates back to their Peoria, Illinois, childhood.

Klise now lives and writes on a 40-acre farm just north of Norwood, Missouri. In her work for People, she has covered famous subjects from Brad Pitt to Timothy McVeigh.

Champaign children’s librarians note that meeting a successful author can motivate children to write as well as read. “It helps kids realize that authors are real people, like themselves, with real lives,” said Librarian Amanda Raklovits. “Kids come away encouraged to share their own ideas in writing, especially when they see that even the best authors may have struggled along the way.”

Registration is not required to attend. For more information, call the Children’s Services department at 217/403–2030.
