Describe the importance of public libraries.

The public library plays many roles in today’s changing society. It remains an important resource for everyone, no matter one’s stage in life. For children, it constitutes a magical place for learning and reading about new exciting things. It can be a place for summer workshops, for after-school gatherings, and for developing study and research skill sets. Access to computers for the less privileged is particularly beneficial.

For the person out of work, the library can be a lifeline back to the working community, with programs designed to rebuild one’s career or aid entry into a new vocation.

For the busy mom or professional, the library can be a place for momentary solitude, a place to meet others or for finding the latest bestseller to escape from the rigors of day-to-day stresses.

The public library is especially important today. Whenever difficult economic times grip the economy, libraries can be places where people go because their resources are freely and plentifully available to all. At the library, they can be assured of access to the kinds of useful information that hopefully will make an impact in their lives. It’s no wonder libraries across the country have seen dramatic increases in the use of their services of late.

Describe your background and what you bring to the board.

I am a 1976 graduate of the University of Illinois, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. I have called Champaign-Urbana my home for close to 40 years. I have been privileged to have worked for Busey Wealth Management over the past 27 years, focusing primarily on helping our clients manage their wealth. As a Chartered Financial Analyst charter holder, I hope to bring a strong financial background to the Library Board. I have previously served on the Urbana Plan Commission, YMCA Board, Champaign Chamber of Commerce, Champaign West Rotary, and most recently, the Champaign Unit 4 School Board.

Tell us a little about your family, pets, etc.

My wife Laurie works at the University of Illinois in the College of Engineering. We are the proud parents of four adult children who are scattered across the U.S. – Seattle, New York, Texas, and Florida. (Could they get any farther away?) We also have a son, Zac, who will be a freshman at Champaign Central High School this fall.

What have you read, watched, or listened to lately?

Read: As an avid runner, I like to read any and all books on running in hopes it will improve my performance. So far, it hasn’t worked.

Watched: Primarily sporting events – Cubs, Bears, and Illini.

Listened to: Classic rock – particularly the Beatles, Stones, The Who.
